Leftover Aslepsias “Hairy Balls”, used as Puffer Fish in my Surrealist Ball buffet centerpiece last week, are Cats’ Eyes tonight in my Jack-o-lantern with a little help from a black Sharpie. Interestingly, the neighborhood squirrels, who have been besieging the area’s pumpkins, appear to regard my carved pumpkin as a giant orange tabby cat. These Gourdivores, have certainly checked it out but so far are too intimidated to attack and gorge! HA!!

For the Yale University Art Gallery’s Surrealist Ball, I designed a buffet table centerpiece: A floating Cloud inhabited by lobsters, with jellyfish and blowfish swimming languidly below through purple rain and seaweed. The bar table design was an homage to René Magritte’s Red Apple and Hat. The cloud was made on a chicken wire form covered with white limonium, 2 varieties of gypsophylla, Queen Anne’s Lace and artificial snow. Twisty Beaucarnea (Pony Tail Palm) foliage masqueraded as seaweed and Callicarpa provided purple rain. The Blowfish were Gomphocarpus Pods (Hairy Ball Acelepias) and the Jellyfish were Sea Urchin Shells strung with Tillisandia (air plants). Iridescent glass balls were bubbles and Osage Oranges were lying on the sea bottom. The shoes I wore to the Ball! . #surrealistball2024
